Follow The Fortunes – A Review

Posted on March 5th, 2010 in Follow the Fortunes by admin

When I first got my copy of the Follow the Fortunes horse racing system I was not immediately impressed. It seemed to involve a considerable amount of work and I could not really see the logic behind it. It was only after I received an email from the systems creator Roger Purssord apologising for not reaching the 100 point profit mark in February that I decided to look more closely at it.
The actual profit figure for February was 96 points which is good by anyone’s standards. Unlike many systems today the results for the Follow the Fortunes system have not been back checked, they are the actual results achieved by Roger since March last year.
Some may remember Rogers earlier Cambridge Target System which was highly acclaimed when it was published a couple of years ago. For this new system Roger has been sat at his computer on a daily basis to prove that Follow the Fortunes worked with real betting. . In the 10 months that he has been testing the system it has generated a profit of over 60 point a month.
The system looks at the first and second favourites in selected races with the intention of backing one and laying the other. The system tells you which one to lay and which to back.
The system on all the evidence looks as though it is very profitable however it does have a drawback. The bets need to be made just before the off and from what I can see it is not unusual to have 10 or more races each day spread across from the first to the last race of the day. Not many people would be able to devote that much time to apply the system.
However, Sportsworld Publishing, the promoters have come up with several options. The first is that you can just buy the system outright and do all the calculations and betting yourself. Secondly rather than do this you can subscribe on a monthly basis and the daily selections will be made available to you on Rogers web site. A final option is to combine a monthly subscription with the use of a Bot (an automatic method where Roger will send the bets direct to your computer) so that it can place your bets for you on your own Betfair account. This is real hands off betting which may not suit everyone although others might like the idea of an automatic betting method especially if it continues to perform well. .
I think that this system will not suit most casual punters or those who cannot spend long periods of time at their computer. However, if someone is prepared to either devote the time required or pay for the automatic option then this is well worth looking at. For more information visit Follow The Fortunes Click Here

The 1000 Points a Year System- A Review

Posted on March 1st, 2010 in 1000 Points A Year by admin

In my position I get literally hundreds of horse racing systems across my desk every year. Many after a quick read get put straight into file 13 (the waste bin) some get sent out to a colleague who runs paper tests for me and a few I think have real potential I keep to test myself. Such a one of these has been Mark Layton’s “1000 Point a Year System. “.

Mark was the creator of The Gamekeeper Turned Poacher System that was released a few months ago. Mark’s history in racing is along one, starting off at the age of 8 helping his father, a bookies runner and going on to an odds compiler and systems analyst for offshore bookmakers such as Ladbrooks. So in simple terms the guy knows what he is talking about.
The 1000 Points a Year is a backing system which is based on trainers and jockeys past performances at various courses. This seems to be a sensible and logical approach to find winners and if past results are to be judged a profitable one.
Based on past results, which is not always a reliable guide to future profitability this system has shown a £10,000 a year profit to £10 stakes over the last 3 years.
The past 3 years results are as follows:
2007 1277.67 points
2008 1224.41 points
2009 1277.67 points
Which would make a total profit over £357,000 to a £100 stake and around 100 points per month.
These are the kind of figures that you cannot ignore and as the system is being marketed by Sportsworld Publishers I have no reason to doubt their accuracy.
This year to date there have been 25 selections, the low number being mainly due to the poor weather and cancelled meetings. There have been 8 winners which has produced a profit of 24.54 points, not the greatest but given the conditions and how difficult January was for all punters quite acceptable.
Until the weather settles down it is difficult to do a meaningful paper test on any horse racing system but I shall be keeping a close eye on the 1000 Points a Year System.
At present I cannot give it an unconditional stamp of approval because it has not yet been possible to test it fully. But if the results live up to the claims then it could well be worth adding to any horse race punters portfolio of systems.

Phil Bull

Phil Bull made a massive amount of money from betting, but not only was he a successful gambler he was also a breeder, owner, writer and publisher. It is estimated he made millions during his career.

In 1948 he launched the now internationally renowned organisation Timeform.
Phil had a shrewd attitude towards betting. He looked at the season as a whole and his form study was the same for every race.

JP McManus

Multi millionaire JP McManus is a renowned gambler and race horse owner.

Originally from Limerick in Ireland, McManus started betting as a schoolboy before working in his family’s plant hire business. He had his own betting stand for a while at Limerick’s greyhound track and it wasn’t long before he moved into owning horses as well as betting and laying. These days JP owns the largest number of National Hunt’s horses.

His first ‘big’ win (rumoured to be around £250,000) was at Cheltenham with a horse called Mister Donovan who was 2nd favourite but ended up winning the race. He also won over £1 million from famous Scottish bookie Freddie Williams in 2006 at Cheltenham.

Although McManus is a high level gambler a large part of his wealth is said to have come from international financing and money dealing which he overseas from his base in Geneva.

Unfortunately in 2008 McManus was diagnosed with cancer although he is now said to be doing well.

Alex Bird

The late Alex Bird made a considerable amount of money from betting after the war.   It is estimated he had an annual turnover of £2 million from gambling.

His interest in gambling began when he was a child.  He learned a lot from his father who was a bookmaker.  However, he decided there was more money to be made from the other side and he become one of Britain’s most well known professional punters of all time.

Bird had several methods for getting one over on the bookies but his most famous was probably his success on betting on photo finishes which in those days took about 5 minutes to develop.  This process earned him a fortune over a period of around 20 years and only stopped when the modernisation of technology meant there was no longer the delay in photo developing.

Alex Bird made his own mind up when it come to betting and rarely listened to anyone – he stuck to his rules and systems.  Even now, almost 20 years after his death, there are current systems available that are based on the practices he used.

His biggest bet was on the well known horse Mill Reef at Gimcrack. The season after this Mill Reef won the Derby, again backed by Bird who had by then backed 7 Derby winners in 8 years.

One of his last bets was on a horse called Final Shot in 1990 when it won the Ayr Gold Cup.

Patrick Veitch

Patrick Veitch is one of Britain’s most successful gamblers who has won over £10 million from betting.

At just 15 years of age this mathematical genius got a place at Cambridge although he never completed his degree, instead he turned to gambling and started his own tipping line.
By his mid 20s Patrick Veitch was already making a lot of money but then came a turning point in his life.  He become the target of a criminal and was forced to live in hiding for many months putting his career on hold and leaving him broke.  However, following this episode he become more successful than ever and was soon making £1 million a year from his strategic betting methods.

Veitch is a strong believer that there is no short cut when it comes to betting – the only way to win is by working hard at it to get it right.

It is very rare to see Patrick at the races.  He uses agents to place his bets and spends most of his time watching and analysing events from his computer.

Harry Findlay

Harry Findlay is a larger than life gambler who has not only made a fortune but also lost a fortune from gambling over the years.

He has always had a love for greyhounds and worked with them for a while after leaving school.  Then aged just 20 Findlay spent 11 months in prison convicted of credit card fraud.

These days bets from his home office which is fully equipped with a number of TV screens and monitors often with different sporting events on at the same time.

As well as being a professional gambler Harry is also an owner.  He jointly owns the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Denman who has more recently won his 2nd Hennessy Gold Cup.  Big Fella Thanks is another of his co-owned horses who he named after his beloved greyhound 1999 Coursing Derby winning Big Fella.

Barney Curley
Barney Curley is a professional gambler and trainer from Northern Ireland who has a reputation for being one of racing’s most colourful characters.

During his childhood he watched his Father run up huge gambling debts but still took up betting himself.

In 1975 he famously organised one of the biggest betting scams of all time – Yellow Sam which made him over £300,000.  He has also appeared in court for illegal lottery after raffling his mansion for £1.5 million.

Giving a Little Back by Barney Curley (Autobiography)

Terry Ramsden

Terry Ramsden originally made his fortune from investment company Glen International in the 80s.  He was worth millions and, amongst other things, owned a string of race horses.

He was also well known for his betting and in 1985 won £2 million on one horse.  The following year he had another big win on Motivator in the 1986 Coral Golden Hurdle Final.

Towards the end of the 80s however, Ramsden’s company collapsed and he started losing massive amounts on bets – he reportedly lost £1 million on one bet alone.  This lead to him going bust at which time he fled to America.   He had won but also lost millions of pounds.

In the late 1990s he was jailed for concealing assets during his bankruptcy – one of which was rumoured to be a £70,000 plus win on the horses.

Despite returning to public life a few years later Ramsden has failed to recreate his earlier success and has since been involved in a number of arguments over money.
Dave Nevison

Dave Nevison became a professional gambler in 1993 after he lost his job working as a currency trader in the City.

He now has an estimated six figure income made up largely from gambling but also from journalism columns he writes.  Dave has also written 2 books and has his own horse racing tipping service.

Alan Potts

At the age of just 14 Alan Potts started betting on horse racing and become a full time professional gambler after being made redundant from his office job in 1991.

He has admitted it took him many years to become a regular winner and despite making an estimated £50,000 a year from betting in the past, he has also suffered losing runs.  Although he is also an owner, author and pundit Potts’ main source of income is from gambling.

In 1999 he jointly formed The Golden Anorak Partnership and this is the banner under which his horses now run.

Alan has written 2 books and also writes articles for the betting exchange – WBX.

The Inside Track by Alan Potts
Clive Holt

Legendary punter Clive Holt was first shown that money could be made from betting by his father who kept a couple of greyhounds during the 1960s.

In the early part of 1975 Clive decided he was ready to quit his job working for the Electricity Board and take up gambling on a full time basis.

He started out using a fairly random approach dictated by his finances and he kept no proper records of bets he had placed.  He soon made the decision to start recording his bets and this was the first of two business methods he implemented in order to make a better profit.  The second was to setup a betting bank.

His first bet was £67 to £30 on Western Jewel who won comfortably and within 6 weeks he had made more money than he was earning in a year working in electricity.  Over the years, although rarely winning more than £1,000 at a time, Holt’s profits from betting provided a lifestyle of luxury cars, exotic holidays and a listed country house with acres of land.

A number of books have been written by Clive Holt who was also the man behind Fineform.

Betfair Renegade – A Review

Posted on December 31st, 2009 in Betfair Renegade by admin

Betfair Renegade is a horse race betting system devised by Neil Spencer. It is the product of a two year study of past results and promises the user a good return for your investment.

In the sales letter for this system, Neil who describes himself as the Renegade Punter, hence the title makes some big claims. For instance he says that he has made in excess of £60,000 in the last 5 months and that he has had over 30 consecutive winning weeks in a row. Also in the sales letter he states that in his best year he made nearly a quarter of a million pounds in winnings.

My natural reaction to such claims is to dismiss them out of hand. To be honest I am still not convinced about the likely hood of anyone getting to those levels of return. However, when a copy of Betfair Renegade landed on my desk I felt it was worth looking at. To my surprise it looks very promising. The system is presented in an 11 page e-book although the actual system can be broken down into 6 simple filters.

Betfair Renegade is an actual laying system which can be applied to the flat, all weather or national hunt races. All of the 6 filters appear to be logical and appropriate although there is one point that I personally do not like. Nigel gives a maximum sp price that should apply and this he suggests you take from the Sporting Life web sites live shows. However we know that a horse with a sp price of say 10/1 can be almost double that on the exchanges. As you are going to be laying the horse on the exchanges I would have thought that that would be the more relevant price.

So that for me is the downside but despite my reservations I do think it could be a basically sound system and I have seen a lot worse than this on the market. If it works and past results suggest that it will this could be one to be added to the portfolio. I intend to test it fully in the next month or so and would suggest anyone who buys this system does the same but it could just be a winner. Horse Race Betting – Don’t Be Fooled by This Trick

Posted on December 11th, 2009 in Articles by admin

Fans of horse race betting will often spend considerable sums of money to get supposed inside information and tips. Recently a friend of mine, Jason contacted me to tell me about an experience he recently had. Fortunately Jason quickly grasped what was happening and did not lose any money as a result but some people may not be so lucky.

The first thing that happened was he received an unsolicited email, obviously he was on some horse betting e-mail list. The basic story in the email was that the sender ran a horse racing syndicate of owners and that he had access to some very special information. All you had to do was reply to the e-mail and he would send you the name of a sure fire winner completely free.

Just out of interest Jason replied and by returned received the name of a horse which he then backed for £20 at 9/4 and surprise, surprise it won. He then received another email offering a dead cert for the next day providing Jason would pay the sender the odds to £20 when the horse won. What he was actually asking was for Jason to add £20 to his bet and then send the winnings for that £20 to the tipster. So if that horse won say at 5/2 Jason would have to send him £50.

Because he was already in profit from the previous day Jason decided he would give it a go. The only problem was that he was going to be out all day so he asked for the information to be sent to his mobile phone. When he got the horses name Jason put £40 on the tipped horse. That represented £20 for himself and £20 for the tipster.

The horse ran and finished 4th well beaten by a 25/1 shot. Jason is not the sort of person to be upset by such a setback but imagine his surprise when he got home. There on his computer was an email from the same guy tipping another horse in the same race.

This is a scam which has been around a long time. How it works is that the tipster selects a race where there are only 2 or 3 horses that have a real chance of winning. You then send out emails offering the free tip. Suppose 300 people take up this offer, 100 get the name of the first possible winner, the next 100 the second and the rest the 3rd horse’s name. Providing all goes to plan at the end of it 100 people will have received the name of the winning horse.

To those winners they then send the second email offering a “dead cert” if they will put £20 on for them. Now assume 60 people respond you just repeat the process. Now the tipster has 20 people who are going to pay him the odds to £20 when the horse wins. Assuming it wins at 3/1 then that is a nice £1200 for the tipster for sending out a few emails. In Jason’s case I think the guy must have come unstuck because I am sure that he did not include a 25/1 shot amongst his selected horses.

There are plenty of tricksters offering the earth to horse race betting fans, just make sure that you do not get caught by this obvious con.

Puntology –a Review

Posted on November 12th, 2009 in Puntology by admin

With this review I am breaking two rules, first of all Puntology is not really a system and secondly I have only gone through about 20% of the content. Never the less I think it is so good I want to tell you about it now rather than wait for another 41 weeks.

Puntology is the brainchild of Michael Wilding who is an expert at assessing and comparing race horse ratings. Because of this skill he can spot value for money bets
and opportunities that most of us would miss. The basis of his success is the level of knowledge that he has on the subject. Now he has condensed that knowledge into 52 weekly instalments or lessons in which he passes this knowledge on.

Right from the first lesson you can start profiting from what you will learn on this course. I signed up for Puntology nearly 3 months ago and have received 11 instalments and I am already beginning to reap the benefits. Subscribers receive a lesson each week which includes up to 20 pages of well written and detailed information. One of Michaels aims is to give you enough knowledge and understanding to allow you to become serious amateur or even professional punter by the time you have completed the 52 modules. If the first 20% of the course is anything to go by this should be easily achievable for most people.

In addition to the lesson Michael sets a weekly (voluntary) assignment which for me this week is comparing the Official Rating on selected races with my own and the Racing Posts opinions. The purpose is to help the punter highlight value bets, something which up till now I have never really understood.

Because I am only 20% through the course myself I cannot tell you everything that you could learn by becoming a subscriber.  However,  future instalments promise to  show how to continually improve form reading abilities so you can constantly improve your ratings and increase your profits.

Following on from that, Puntology will explore some advanced strategies for taking your betting to the next level of profitability. Also Michael promises to show subscribers 4 simple things to do to “run” your betting campaign in less than an hour per day.

I suppose some people would have preferred Puntology to have been produced as one big ebook rather than 52 separate lessons. The trouble is this would have created a massive tome which few people would actually sit down and read from cover to cover. For me it is a bit like a giant salami sausage and there is only one way to eat that, slice by slice.

What I like about the course is that right from the first lesson you can start applying what you have learnt and profit from it. I also have one big tip for you, don’t just read the lessons off the screen, but print them off and save them because the lessons could become the most valuable reference source that you could have.

Free Horse Racing Systems and Tips – Are They Worth the Price?

Posted on November 7th, 2009 in Articles by admin

You have probably seen adverts on the Internet or received emails offering free horse racing systems. This really does seem like a win win opportunity for the punter. Instead of having to pay out a pile of money someone is prepared to give you their system or tips for gratis, zilch or in other words nothing.

Does it sound almost too good to be true? Then it almost certainly is. So you have to ask yourself why the person is doing this. One of the biggest comments that you will read on racing and betting forums is “if a system is so good, and makes so much money why sell it on to other people? When you are giving the information away the information for nothing it becomes an even bigger question.

Each and every one of us has a very valuable property that all online marketers would like to get hold of. That is your email address which by requesting a free product will be giving the marketer both access to the address and the right to send you further emails.

You can be certain that once you have requested your free item you will receive many further emails offering you paid systems and tipping services. To be honest there is nothing wrong or unethical about this marketing method. Incentives and free gifts have been the back bone of marketing for many years.

What you have to question is the quality of the free system or tips that you receive. Recently I have seen comments from a couple of sources that claim that around 90% of racing systems currently on the market are a complete waste of money. So if that is true what chance do you stand with the free stuff?

Some of the free reports and systems are little more than up rated sales letters aimed at getting you to buy products. However, surprisingly some of the free material that is offered is at least as good as some that is offered for sale. The secret, whether it is free or paid for, is to evaluate and test the system or tips before putting any money on the selections. Even if the system is not perfect it may well give you ideas of how to improve and profit from it.

The key to using any racing system whether paid for or free is to remain skeptical until you have proved it to your own satisfaction. Do not believe any of the claims or forecasts and after “paper testing” if you are satisfied start off with small stakes at first.

You will continue to see offers of free reports and systems because in marketing terms they do work. My own company offer a no cost 29 page report everyone who requests it will also receive emails about our web site.

The quality of the free material sent out by various marketers could give you an idea of how good their paid for products will be. If they send out rubbish for free you can bet that whatever they are selling will be the same quality.

The final tip is that there is nothing to stop you from unsubscribing to marketers emails if they become a pain.

Simply the Best – A review

Posted on October 17th, 2009 in Simply the Best by admin

Simply the Best is the latest offering from Sports World Publishing. This system devised by Bernard Hibbett and concentrates on National Hunt Races run between November and April.

The Simply the Best system does live up to its name in fact that it really is simple. In fact it made even more so by the fact that when you purchase the system you will be entitled to receive either access to Bernard’s telephone service or access to his secure Internet website. There you will see posted the daily selections from the Simply the Best system so you do not even have to work them out yourself. However, whether you really need this service I am not sure as it is very easy and quick to pick out the daily selections.

The true test of how good a system is the past results that have been achieved. Although past results are no guarantee of success they can be a good guide. Over the last two National Hunt seasons the system has produced 199 winners from 532 selections which represent a 37.5% success rate. .

Over those 2 seasons Simply the Best has shown a profit of 753 points to level stakes.
This represents profit of £3,760 per season based on a level stake of £10 using bookies SP.

Anything that comes from Bernard Hibbett  is well worth taking a look at and I shall be adding this system to my portfolio. I shall start using it with the Ascot Meeting that begins on 31st October and will look forward to a successful 2009/10 NH season.

Simply the Best is recommended. For more details visit
